We’re thrilled to announce the release of our brand new bluebird design, and we wanted to give you a sneak peek behind the scenes at the creative process behind our Mother’s Angels® ornaments.
Each of our Mother’s Angels® designs begins its journey as a simple hand-drawn sketch — created digitally in Photoshop. While Photoshop might typically bring to mind photo editing and manipulation, for illustrators like myself, it serves as an incredible tool for creativity. It offers an array of painting features and tools that I have embraced over the years. I even purchase digital paintbrushes that mimic traditional media, allowing me to create digital paintings with the same level of detail as traditional ones (each of my paintings can take up to 40 hours to complete).
Over the years, my work has garnered recognition from several celebrities. Stars like Stephen Amell from the TV series Arrow, Erin Ryder from Destination Truth, Matthew Perry from Friends, and even Colin Firth from the Kingsman movies have seen and appreciated my designs. (Colin Firth even took the time to sign one of my pieces, and I have it proudly displayed in my studio!) This recognition has been incredibly gratifying and further motivates me to continue creating heartfelt and meaningful designs.
I taught myself digital painting years ago due to the lack of space for traditional paint supplies while living in a small apartment in Los Angeles. This self-taught skill has become an essential part of my creative process, particularly in the design phase of our Mother’s Angels® ornaments.
For our latest bluebird ornament, I began with a digital sketch using the basic angel shape as the framework. Our goal was to capture the essence of these beautiful creatures, which are often seen as symbols of hope and happiness.

Once the rough design is complete, it’s time to convert it into a vector design. A vector design is a type of graphic that uses mathematical equations to create precise shapes and images. This step is important because the data from the vector file is needed by our laser cutter to accurately cut the individual pieces of the ornament. The vector process can take awhile and can be quite intricate — often requiring me to tap into my left-brain skillsets (which can be a bit painful at times! 😂).
⇧ Once the sketch is done, I bring the sketch into Illustrator to draw it as a vector. This is a cleaned up version of the sketch that is needed for the laser.
Seeing a new design come together in physical form is always an exhilarating experience. In the picture where I’m holding the angel, this moment is captured right before attaching the top piece. Take a moment to notice how each element perfectly fits together. Pretty neat, right?

The bluebird has a rich spiritual meaning, often associated with happiness, hope, and renewal. It’s a bird that many believe brings messages of love and positivity. Incorporating this symbol into our Mother’s Angels® ornament collection felt like a natural choice, as our goal is to offer gifts of hope and beauty to those who receive them.
